Is God's Truth Laughable? Genesis 18:13-14

Is God's Truth Laughable?

June 15, 2002

The Lord asked Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh? Does she doubt that she can have a child in her old age? I am the Lord! There is nothing too difficult for me. I'll come back next year at the time I promised, and Sarah will already have a son."
Genesis 18:13-14 (CEV*)
Sarah was very old when the Lord told Abraham that she would have a child. This was something so beyond her human imagining, so ridiculous, that it caused Sarah to laugh.

Sarah wasn't someone who normally laughed at God. She was someone who endeavored to be faithful. But this time the Lord said something about her that struck her as funny.

The Lord's ways are not the ways of the world, and messages we get from God may indeed seem foolish or funny by the world's standards. The Lord may expect from us something that doesn't seem realistic or even possible, in some cases. But remember, what's beyond our comprehension is possible for God. Sarah had a son, and what happens to us could also be something that we never thought could happen.

When we question in our minds what God tells us is to come, we are really saying we know better than God. Talk about something ridiculous! But I know I find myself doing it, and have to stop and laugh at myself for my presumptuousness.

Learn to trust the Lord without reservation. What is beyond our imagining is possible for God. Have faith, and you will find that God's promises are always fulfilled.
